What a strong Google Business Profile looks like
You are not scoring shops here. You are learning what a complete, honest profile looks like so you can compare two or three before you call.
Google's own ranking inputs
Google's tips to improve local ranking say local results weigh relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search. Distance is how far the shop is from you. Prominence includes information Google has about the business across the web, including review volume and quality. Complete the basics first: verify the profile, keep name, address, and phone consistent, set hours (including special hours), and pick the right primary category plus relevant secondary categories.
Signs of a maintained profile
When you open a shop on Maps, look for:
- A verified badge and matching NAP across the web
- Hours that match what they say on the phone
- Categories that fit the work you need
- Photos or videos of real jobs, not only stock logos
- Owner replies that stay short and specific (review reply tips)
BrightLocal's Google reviews guide notes that reviews show in the Local Pack, Knowledge Panel, and Maps, and that owners cannot switch reviews off. NARI treats recent activity, photos, and replies as a first impression. You should too.
How owners ask for reviews (without cheating)
Google lets owners share a review link or QR code on receipts or follow-up emails. Incentives such as discounts or free goods for a review count as fake engagement. Maps policy on incentivized reviews and prohibited content backs the ban. If a shop brags about "free gift for five stars," walk.
What this page is not
This is education for neighbors and for owners who want a cleaner profile. It is not a scorecard. We do not invent AggregateRating markup. We do not publish star counts for shops. We do not scrape review bodies.
For Washington contractors, a polished profile still sits next to L&I Verify and a written contract from Hire Smart.
